Oral Sedation
Oral sedation is a safe and effective method used to help children feel very calm, relaxed, and comfortable during dental treatment. It involves giving a prescribed medication by mouth before the procedure, allowing your child to remain at ease throughout their visit.
When Is Oral Sedation Recommended?
Oral sedation is often a good option for children who:
-
Have moderate to severe dental anxiety
-
Have a strong gag reflex
-
Have difficulty sitting still for extended periods
-
Have special healthcare or behavioral needs
How Does Oral Sedation Work?
Oral sedation medication is given before the procedure, depending on your child’s age and needs. The medication is absorbed through the digestive system and begins to take effect within a short period of time.
As the sedation works:
-
Your child will become drowsy and deeply relaxed
-
Anxiety and fear are significantly reduced
-
Muscles relax, making it easier for your child to stay still
-
Many children feel like they are “sleepy” or in a dream-like state
-
Some children may not remember much of the procedure afterward
Although your child may appear sleepy, they are not fully asleep. They can still respond to simple instructions, such as opening their mouth or taking deep breaths.
